STUDIES OF WESTERN LIFE.
New York: The Albertype Co., 1890. 1st edition, 2nd state. Hardcover. 12 b/w plates w/ facing descriptions. A thin, oblong hardcover book in grey-green cloth bound with thread and stamped in gilt. Edges rubbed, and corners wearing through. Small slit at head of spine; the cloth has been neatly glued back down. Side edge of back cover is lightly bumped. Early owners' pencil inscriptions on front pastedown and rear free endpapers. One of those owners' pencil notes at the top of the title page have been erased, but remain faintly visible. Plates barely yellowed with age; occasional pale fingerprint smudges and tiny blemishes along the edges. Tiny closed tears (none longer than 1/4 inch) at bottom of the plates titled THE AMERICAN BUFFALO and THE HORSE WRANGLER, affecting their caption pages as well; the tear on the first plate is in danger of fully chipping off. Otherwise, pages essentially unmarked, and binding tight. Very good condition overall. Item #323670
Russell's SCARCE first book in the first edition, second state, with a description of the first plate printed on the back of the title page (see Howes R-531).
