CUT SIGNATURE OF GEN. GEORGE AUGUSTUS WETHERALL

Authentic cut signature of Sir George Augustus Wetherall (1788-1868), a British general best remembered for his role in suppressing the Lower Canada Rebellion in 1837-38. He also served in other areas of the British Empire, including Java and Madras.

The signature is in black ink on a slip of blue paper, which is backed with asymmetrically cut cardstock. A previous owner handwrote the general's name on the cardstock above the signature. The total dimensions are about 3.5" long x 2.5" wide.

Wetherall wrote "AG" just below his signature; this potentially dates it to around 1854-60, during which time he served as Adjutant General to the Forces.

Condition is very good. There is a faint horizontal crease across the signature (as this was likely cut from a letter, the paper was probably folded here originally). The bottom right corner is bent at the very tip. Otherwise, no stains, rips, or other flaws on the signature itself. The cardstock has yellowed with age, but again, no rips or stains. As mentioned above, the cardstock is cut unevenly; it could be trimmed for a more attractive display. Item #319638
