A synod historically is a council of a church, usually convened to decide an issue of doctrine, administration or application. In modern usage, the word often refers to the governing body of a particular church, whether its members are meeting or not. It is also sometimes used to refer to a church that is governed by a synod. In the case of this book, Thomas Shine, Bishop of Middlesbrough in England, authorized the publication of this collection of decrees determining the common life of Catholics in Middlesbrough. Of interest will be a pamphlet included with the book that is the program for the thirty-third synod in the diocese. The pamphlet includes twelve decrees and Bishop Shine's allocution to the members of the synod. Also included with the book is a typed letter from Bishop Shine to another bishop concerning a "Day of Recollection for the Clergy" to be held the following year.
