ORIGINAL AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT FOR A SERMON, "MONDAY IN PASSION WEEK" Original autograph manuscript for a sermon, "Monday in Passion Week".

1853. Leather bound. Signed by Kingsley with his initials "CK" at upper right corner. 8 pages, oblong octavo, in ink on blue writing paper, bound together with string. Mild wear along edges, vertical fold in middle, overall very good condition. Enclosed in an old blue leather solander case. Leather lightly scuffed and worn, box otherwise very good.
This manuscript was offered at Swann Galleries in 2016 and failed to sell (against a $800-$1200 estimate), probably because it was mis-catalogued as being incomplete. The confusion likely results from the manuscript ending with the incomplete text of a closing prayer - likeley one Kingsley knew by heart and therefore did not need to fully write out. In reading the manuscript, it is clearly complete. Item #1293144

The sermon is on Isaiah 50:13 and was first delivered in 1853. The date 1869 was later added, presumably when Kingsley re-used the sermon. Best-known for his boy's adventure novels such as WESTWARD HO!, Kingsley was also a prominent Anglican priest in Victorian England. He was a great proponent of Muscular Christianity, a hugely popular movement which advocated the use of athletics to promote Christian moral behavior in youths.
