FRAMED ORIGINAL PRINT FROM WEINMANN'S "PHYTANTHOZA ICONOGRAPHIA": Four Irises
An original hand-colored botanical plate extracted from a volume of the botanical masterwork PHYTANTHOZA ICONOGRAPHIA by Johann W. Weinmann (1683-1741), a German apothecary and botanist. The PHYTANTHOZA ICONOGRAPHIA was originally published in 8 volumes across 1735-1745 and contained 1,000 hand-colored plates.
Offered here is plate no. 612, depicting four species of irises --- Iris humilior versicolor, Iris humilis latifolia major, Iris humilis flore saturate violaceo, and Iris latifolia humilior purpurea. The plate is matted and framed for display (the frame is modern), with total dimensions approximately 26.5" x 21". The plate itself is approximately 16" x 10.75".
Condition is VERY GOOD+. The plate itself is speckled with numerous small, circular brown spots, but has no visible chips or tears. The colors are still vivid, without evidence of sunfading. The frame itself is in excellent shape (no cracks or chips in the glass, only mild abrasions to the painted wood frame; burgundy-red cloth matting unstained; wire hanger still intact and suitable for use). An attractive display piece as well as a fascinating bibliographic artifact from the 18th century! Item #326517
