Volume 56 of the ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, containing all issues from January 1 through June 25, 1870. Includes reporting on the First Vatican Council (with numerous fine engravings depicting Pope Pius IX and the ceremonies of the Council) and a review of LOTHAIR by Benjamin Disraeli. Contains plenty of fine engravings, including a full-page portrait of Charles Dickens, ladies' fashions of the day, and much more. Measures approx. 16" x 11.75". The folding Oxford plate is present but it is detached and torn into about a half dozen pieces.
