New York: Harper & Brothers, 1891. Leather. 1052p. Ex-library. An oversize hardcover book with black leather spine and corners, and marbled boards. POOR CONDITION. The spine has completely detached, but is still present, tucked inside the cover. The boards are also completely detached and many pages are loose. All pages are brittle with age and easily chip and tear when not handled gently. A few old library markings inside as well. Closed tears in pages 5 and 499-502 (which are also detached). Volume 24 of the ladies' fashion magazine HARPER'S BAZAR (later spelled HARPER'S BAZAAR), containing all weekly issues from January 3 through December 26, 1891 (the Dec. 26 issue is in 3 parts). Filled with lots of excellent black and white engravings of women's fashions, hairstyles, and more. Includes serial installments of TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES by Thomas Hardy (1891 was the original year of the novel's publication). Features animal illustrations by Edwin Landseer ("No Hunting Till the Weather Breaks," "The Intruding Puppies"), many illustrations by William Thomas Smedley ("He Is Coming," "A Society Bud," "The Secretary Was Appalled," "The Second Assembly Ball," "At an Old-Time Pace," "The Lenten Season," and others), a 2-page portrait of Rembrandt, the artist; an illustrated article on Sarah Bernhardt as Joan of Arc; the poem "Barbara Allen" illustrated by Albert E. Sterner; a portrait of Clara Barton on the cover of the June 20 issue; and an engraving of Gaspar de Guzman after the painting by Velazquez. Includes foldout sewing supplement no. 29.
