Back cover and last page are completely detached. Edges heavily scuffed and boards lightly rubbed. Spine is crackly-looking and has an old sticker with the number 6 written on it. Small tear on the spine just above the word "Harper's." LACKS the title page and index. A few old library markings inside and some newsprint smudges here and there. Pages are a bit brittle with age, and will chip or tear if not handled gently. Small tanned spots in gutter of pages 306-307. Pages 565-568 are bound out of sequence. OFFERED AS-IS. Item #186254

Features a 2-page spread depicting Santa Claus with his sack of toys, surrounded by cats and dogs; a 1-page, illustrated article about the wife of Benjamin Disraeli; commentary upon the death of Emperor Napoleon III of France; a 2-page spread depicting the Temple of Heaven in Beijing (Peking); a full-page illustration of Marie Antoinette preparing to approach the guillotine; installments of the novel LADY ANNA by Anthony Trollope; a recurring column on "George Eliot's Sayings"; an article on Fanny Stenhouse, a Mormon defector who wrote about the practice of polygamy; commentary on a visit by the Shah of Persia to Queen Victoria; and a portrait of Princess Dagmar of Denmark, eventual Czarina of Russia.
