New York: Harper & Brothers, 1880. Leather. 834p. Ex-library. An oversize hardcover book with black leather spine and corners and green marbled boards. Edges and surfaces heavily scuffed. Spine is crackly-looking and has a sticker in the middle with the number 13 on it. Library stamp on title page and on front page of first issue. Very old address sticker on each issue's front page. All pages slightly brittle with age, and will tear or chip if not handled gently. Small stain in gutter of pages 32-40. Closed tear in the middle of page 229. Closed tear in page 267. Foldout illustration on pages 360-361 has a large piece torn off, which is still present. Small hole at the bottom of page 753. Otherwise, text unmarked and binding tight. Item #186252

Volume 13 of the ladies' fashion magazine HARPER'S BAZAR (later spelled HARPER'S BAZAAR), containing all weekly issues from January 3 through December 25, 1880 (including supplement to Christmas issue). Filled with lots of excellent black and white engravings of women's fashions, hairstyles, and more, including illustrations by Benjamin Vautier ("A Civil Marriage," p. 108), Frederick Stuart Church ("Midwinter," p. 153), S.G. McCutcheon ("Fill the Font with Roses," p. 225; "The Music of the Poor," p. 437), Peltro William Tomkins (a foldout called "The Morning of Life," p. 232-233), Davidson Knowles ("Tattooing - an Ancient Custom," p. 252), and Ludwig Knaus ("A Village Festival," p. 296-297). Features numerous foldout illustrations and occasional sheet music as well. One of the foldouts is a portrait of the actress Sarah Bernhardt. Princess Beatrice, daughter of Queen Victoria, is on the cover of the May 8 issue, and there is a full page illustration of George Washington as well. Also contains installments of the novel LORD BRACKENBURY by Amelia Edwards. Measures approx. 16" x 12"
