New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1890. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 304p. A hardcover book bound in 1/4 navy blue cloth with printed boards. The spine has been rebacked, preserving nearly all of the original cloth, and the interior has been recased with new endpapers. Good condition overall. The original spine cloth is chafed and has a ragged appearance as some old tears were repaired when the new cloth was added. The new cloth is visible at the head and foot of the spine. The corners are rubbed through, and the boards are scuffed and spotted with light stains. Small dampstain on side edge of title pages, penetrating through to page 30. Otherwise, text clean and binding tight. A sturdy, readable copy. Item #174618
The scarce first edition of this major sociological work on slum life in New York City. Illustrated with many black and white plates.
