FROM THE PRESS OF THE 'TURN-COAT PRINTER OF THE REVOLUTION'. Hugh Gaine was a colonial printer who supported the colonists at the beginning of the American Revolution and his newspaper, The New York Mercury, was a voice of the colonists. Financial pressure caused Gaine to return to the Royalist cause in November 1776 and his paper supported the british for the remainder of the Revolution. Gaine continued his business after the war ended and in 1792 published the first Bible in America printed from stereotype. The copy offered here is the second edition printed from the same type; it is actually far scarcer as Gaine closed his business in 1800 and only a few copies of this Bible were released.
