New York: Doran, 1921. 1st edition. Hardcover. THE TRUE FIRST PRINTING THE EXCEEDINGLY RARE DUSTJACKET. The book is in fine condition and the jacket is in very good condition. Light brown cloth with collie head on front board stamped in dark brown and white; lettering on spine in dark brown. In the rare dustjacket which has a photograph of "Buff" - actually a photo of Sunnybank Sigurd as Buff is a fictional character. The jacket shows light shelfwear including tiny 1/4 inch chips and short closed tears ; there are no large chips.
Rais 21. The jacket is exceptionally rare and bibliographer Terhune expert Kathleen Rais was unable to loocate one. In over 40 years of dealing in Terhune material, this is the only one we have seen. When this book was published in 1921, Doran did not use the monogram on the copyright page to identify the first printing; the early printings (including the true first printing) are indicated by the collie head stamped in white and brown (in most but not all later printings the collie head is stamped in blind). The other key is the jacket as the later dustjackets state "Second printing" etc. on the spine of the jacket. The first printing jacket is identified by the fact that it does NOT state the printing on its spine.
Technically, a copy of the second printing with a white/brown collie on the cover would be identical to the first printing if no jacket is present. It is not not known at exactly what printing Doran switched to a blindstamped collie head but as copies exist with a brown/white collie head and a second printing jacket, we know this holds true for at least the second printing.
