FIRST EDITION of an important early work of Americana. Martineau (1802-1876), a popular English author, is sometimes considered as the first female sociologist. She traveled to America in 1834. She visited New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, and Louisiana. She held strong views on slavery and inter-racial marriage (which she approved) and her visit was met with hostility in many circles. Howes M348; Sabin 44940, Soliday III 312.
