London: Henry Herringman, 1656. 1st Edition. Leather bound. Bound in modern three-quarter red leather and marbled boards. A rare but defective work which lacks the frontispiece portrait, title page and pp. 13-16 (which contain the drawing of the chessboard). There are therefore no illustrations in this copy. Multiple pages have been repaired with new paper worked into the missing blank margins of the original pages. The missign pages noted above are supplied in facsimile but are not bound in. Wing G1810. Item #1231669
A book which is both rare and defective, it is nevertheless an important early English book on chess. The last copy at auction sold for $5750 in 2015 making this an affordable placeholder for a chess book collection.
